Refuel YXE - John G. Diefenbaker International Airport
Studio Jensen was commissioned to design branding and signage for Refuel restaurant in the secure area of YXE as part of a major airport expansion project designed by Kindrachuk Agrey Architecture.
This simple, clean and bold solution portrays movement and transition.
Signage was a unique challenge for the space, as lease restrictions were quite severe. To have frontage that was impactful enough to notice from a distance, we proposed an extremely horizontal format; this approach gave the frontage branding added gravitas and intensified the sense of movement.
With a subdued palette of grey, silver and natural walnut, the signage doesn’t try to compete visually with the main architectural features in the space but rather is supporting. In addition to the concept and design, the woodworking and all spray finishing on the sign was done here at Studio Jensen.
As patrons would be awaiting flights, we proposed the reverse side of the sign bid travelers ‘Bon Voyage’.
The next time you get a chance, be sure to walk through REFUEL, featuring an actual wing from a DeHavilland Otter aircraft above the bar and not one, but two tail sections of smaller planes serving as tables.
